To create a curved hem at the back of a garment, I recommend working through the steps outlined for shaping a shawl in the last chapter (this page). Sketch the shape you would like, then calculate the number of short rows you need in total and the stitches between each turn. Remember that you can adjust the number of stitches between the turns as you go to create a more complex curve.
Working from Side to Side
Garments look completely different when they are knit from side to side. This works especially well with self-striping yarn as you turn horizontal stripes into vertical stripes.
In order to shape the body of a sideways-knit garment, you need to add short rows at the hips to create an A-line shape. The overall width at the hips is determined by the number of short rows that you add.
